چکیده

We point out that both superexchange between CuO2 layers, and interlayer tunneling, derive from frustrated one-particle hopping between layers, and that they should be treated on an equal footing. Doing so, we arrive at a new view of the nature of pairing in the cuprate supercondcutors, which explains the striking even ↔ odd selection rule observed by Keimer in neutron scattering by YBCO.

The “Spin Gap” in Cuprate Superconductors

We discuss some generalities about the spin gap in cuprate superconductors and in detail, how it arises from the interlayer picture. It can be thought of as spinon (uncharged) pairing, which occurs independently at each point of the 2D Fermi surface because of the momentum selection rule on interlayer superexchange and pair tunneling interactions. Some predictions can be made.

Fundamental constraints for the mechanism of superconductivity in cuprates

Considerable progress has been made over the last decade in understanding the phenomenological properties of the cuprate high-Tc superconductors and in producing well characterized high quality materials. Nevertheless, the pairing mechanism itself remains controversial. We establish a criterion to test theories for layered superconductors relying on a substantial interlayer contribution. The cr...

Resonant Pair Tunneling and Singular effects of c-axis disorder in cuprate and organic superconductors

In the interlayer pair tunneling (ILPT) theory of superconductivity the large scale Tc has its origin in the k-space locality of the inter layer pair tunneling matrix elements. We reinterpret the same physics as a process of resonant pair tunneling and illustrate it through cooper pair analysis. This interpretation is used to give a mechanism which leads to a singular suppression of Tc as funct...

Theory of Sinusoidal Modulation of the Resonant Neutron Scattering in High Temperature Superconductors

A model with interlayer pairing is proposed to explain the sinusoidal modulation of the resonant neutron scattering in high temperature superconductors. It is found that the interlayer pairing has s-wave symmetry in the CuO2 plane and has comparable magnitude with the d-wave intralayer pairing. It is also found that the interlayer pairing mainly affects momentum close to the hot spots on the Fe...

Incompatibility of modulated checkerboard patterns with the neutron scattering resonance peak in cuprate superconductors

Checkerboard patterns have been proposed to explain the real space structure observed in scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on BSCCO and Na-CCOC. However, simple checkerboard patterns have low energy incommsensurate IC spin peaks rotated 45° from the direction of the charge IC peaks, contrary to what is seen in neutron scattering. Here, we study modulated checkerboard patterns which can ...
